Graduating Year 2015

University : Dual Bachelor’s Program between Sciences Po and the University of British Columbia.

What is your Major?

I major in Economics at Sciences Po, and I will major in Computer Science at UBC.

What work work/intern experience have you had recently?

Summer Internship in OECD. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is an intergovernmental economic organisation with 35 member countries, founded in 1960 to stimulate economic growth and world trade. It provides a platform for countries to compare policy experiences, seek answers to common problems and coordinate domestic and international policies. The OECD’s headquarter is in Paris.

There were two major obstacles in my internship application: OECD usually recruits graduate/PHD students for internship, and normally applicants are required to hold an OECD country citizenship. (China is not a member state!) My Economic Professor at Sciences Po passed my resume to some senior economists at OECD. Fortunately in the summer there is a project called ”SMEs and Entrepreneurship in Europe and China”, which fits my schedule perfectly. After two telephone interviews and one site visit, I got the offer.

Give some advice to our current Dulwich students.

Accompany the ones you love and ones who love you as much as possible. Parents, teachers, friends…you will miss them when you are abroad.

Food Science and Nutritional Science but I am planning to transfer to Anatomy and Cell Biology next year.

What was your favourite subject in DHSZ?

Biology.

What work work/intern experience have you had recently?

Last semester I joined AIESEC (a student run NGO which is aimed at youth leadership development by organising international exchanges). State the most difficult aspect of going to study abroad.

The biggest challenge for me is to be independent enough to live on my own. I found that it is not just as simple as knowing how to take care of myself or how to achieve good grades, living alone is far more complicated than I expected. Life is a long process of dealing with every single problem that can pop up at any time. Stay calm and solution-oriented even when you think you are facing the worst situation, contact everyone you think who can offer you help with the problem, talk to your friends, and your roommate about your worries, don't keep everything to yourself and suffer it alone.

State one of the key aspects/values of being a DHSZ student that has helped you in life.

The ability to study independently that I gained from the four years of study in DHSZ helped me adapt well to the teaching style of my professors.

When you lived abroad, name one thing that you missed the most about China.

I really miss the sense of security when walking on the street without worrying about getting lost since it is the place that I have been lived 19 years.

In 4 words, give some advice to our current Dulwich students.

Stay prepared, solution-oriented, involved.

Graduating Year : 2015

University The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania

What is your Major?

Undecided, planning to do Management & Finance.

What was your favourite subject in DHSZ?

Drama (Acting Romeo during the Shakespeare Festival).

What work work/intern experience have you had recently?

I am an NBA journalist for Tencent, covering news of the Philadelphia Sixers throughout this 2016~2017 season. Playing basketball and watching NBA has been my favorite hobby since 12 years ago and getting this journalist job has been a dream come true. I always watch full games during free time, read news articles about NBA from multiple news websites such as Bleacher Report, The Player’s Tribune and Clutch Points, and sometimes analyze the data of players and teams. Now being a journalist is an incredible opportunity that allows me to write game reports with my own perspective and interview players personally. While this job is very challenging, it has been a fun experience.

State the most difficult aspect of going to study abroad.

The most difficult aspect of studying abroad is definitely trying to fit in a different environment. Sometimes people in the west think that you are too Asian while people from back home think you are too westernized. As a third culture kid, a lot of times I feel that I am stuck in the middle. After meeting this issue, I found that sharing your feelings about your identity and your perspectives about things with other people is a good way to connect with other people and find your own friend groups. Don’t be afraid to talk to people from different backgrounds.

State one of the key aspects/values of being a DHSZ student that has helped you in life.

The key value of being a DHSZ student that has helped me in life is that DHSZ offers students so many different opportunities to experience new things. I never imagined myself acting Romeo in our school drama ‘Romeo & Juliet’ during the Shakespeare Festival in front of 500 people before going to DHSZ because I used to be shy and had zero acting experience. DHSZ really pushed me to be open to experience new things and walk out of my comfort zone to embrace new challenges and explore the unknown.

When you lived abroad, name one thing that you missed the most about China.

I am reminiscent of the vibes of Suzhou and my friends because it is my hometown and we have created so many beautiful memories back home together.

In 4 words, give some advice to our current Dulwich students.

Explore, Experience, Adventure, Opportunity.

And a quote from my friend which inspires me a lot:

Life is all about taking chances. Don’t be afraid to take chances. Because it’s only the chances and the risks that you take are that what will push you forward in the future. It’s only the people who don’t take these risks will go back, regret and say ‘why didn’t I do that?’
